Grade 4

Grade 4 Teacher (on medical leave)

I earned my E.C.E. Certificate at Douglas College, my Bachelor of General Studies at S.F.U. and completed the Professional Development Program at S.F.U.    I started at Highroad in 1989 and helped in the move from A.C.E. to traditional classrooms with BC Ministry of Education funding for the elementary grades. I enjoy coaching soccer and basketball. I try to encourage students to experience activities that they may not have explored before.

I enjoy the outdoors, where I would like to camp and fish more often. I Have been a member of the Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association for several years. The field trips I enjoy most are the Chilliwack River Fish Hatchery and the guided tour of Cheam Lake Wetlands. I enjoy reading and collect old books. I have a wife Anna without whom I would be lost. My daughter Prisca works at the Chilliwack Public Library and will graduate this year with a degree in honours History. She was a graduate of H.R.A. attending there from Kindergarten to grade 12. She got married in February and now our family includes a son Colin.

Public Relations, Honour Choir

Public Relations

I began teaching at Highroad Academy in 2002 with the task of creating a K-12 music program.  After losing my voice in 2008, I taught Bible until there was a need to coordinate the Special Needs department, where I stepped in for a 2 year stint before the position of Public Relations was created.  I attended 14 different schools, graduated from Centennial High School, attended Oral Roberts University and Portland State University and finally graduated with Bachelor of Music (Piano Performance) and Master of Science in Teaching (Music) at 42.  I hold an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music degree in Piano Performance and have had a private piano teaching practice since I was 14.  My husband and I serve as elders at City Life Church in Chilliwack.  The greatest joy of my life is serving God together with my husband, kids and grandkids in 4 different cities in 3 countries on 2 continents.

I am a graduate of Highroad Academy and went to Columbia Bible College earning my Early Childhood Education Certificate and University of the Fraser Valley to get my Special Needs Diploma. I have supervised daycare and preschools, and have also been a Supported Childcare Consultant working with children who require extra support. I was blessed to be a stay at home mom for 7 years before opening up my own multi–age in home daycare, which I ran until Highroad Children’s Centre opened in September 2010.

I enjoy the challenge and joys of working with children.  I also love being a mom; God has blessed me with 3 amazing children who attend Highroad Academy.  It is terrific being able to work in the same place where my kids attend school. As a family we like camping together, going to the river or beach, going for a bike ride, walking in the woods, reading and snuggling, playing games or bouncing on the tramp.

I graduated from Norland Sr. High School in Miami, FL and received my B.S. in Elementary Education at Miami Christian College and  my M.S. in Reading at Barry University, with other graduate studies at the University of Alabama.

I am a former MK (missionary kid) from Cuba and taught many years in an MK school in Quito, Ecuador.  This makes me a very missions minded person, and I want my students to realize there's a "world out there" they need to know and reach with God's love. I enjoy reading, quilting, and taking long walks.

Highroad Academy might just be part of my DNA.  I began here the year the school opened as a (very young) student, and after I graduated, I returned to volunteer as coach and choir director.  Then it was off to UBC to get my B.A and B.Ed. degrees and become a full fledged teacher.  My husband and I met as students at Highroad, and we are now the proud parents of three extraordinary Highroad students.

Our family loves music and we are all involved in our church's worship ministry, where my husband is the Worship Pastor.  Being part of outreach is one of our family activities, whether that means working together at the Soup Kitchen, or traveling to the other side of the world to work in refugee camps.  We consider ourselves blessed to have had these experiences. In the summer, it is our goal to spend as many weeks as we can camping close by the ocean, reading books, riding bikes, and exploring.

I have lived in Chilliwack for the majority of my life and graduated from UBC with my BA and teaching degree in 2000.  After teaching full-time for six years and having two children, I joined the Highroad teaching staff in 2010.  My entire teaching career, so far, has been in the middle school grades and it is in this age of students that I find the perfect blend of independence, curiosity, and transparency in their desire to learn more about life and their own personal relationship with Jesus.  Working part-time also allows me to create a balance between pursuing my passion for teaching and raising young children with my husband, Jeff.  As a family, we love to be outdoors as much as possible which is usually time spent playing on our street with the other families in the neighbourhood.  When I have the chance to be alone, I head straight to Starbucks with a good book.

I am currently finishing my E.C.E. certificate at UFV. I have been working with children in a variety of settings for over 6 years. I have had extensive experience with children who require extra support and/or have developmental delays. I started at Highroad as a T.A. in January 2009. My greatest passion is working with children and helping all children, no matter their situation, thrive and feel loved, accepted and special. I spend my free time with my husband and my own children. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, being outdoors and horse back riding.
