How far can I go?

It is a question we all ask ourselves in one form or another as we are growing up. It is our “dream” to be something or do something and we want to know “Can we really do it”? For two young Highroad graduates, that dream is becoming a reality. Both Kari R & Allison O had dreams of playing university volleyball. At different times while playing for the Knights they were both confident that they could and scared that they couldn’t. That is the hard thing about having dreams. No one can guarantee they will come true. For Kari & Allison, the journey that began in elementary school continues today. Kari is a left side hitter for the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford, a nationally ranked college team in the CCAA (Canadian College Athletics Association). She begins her first season in October of this year after a standout career at Highroad which saw her win many all-star awards and help lead the Knights to three Fraser Valley Championships and a pair of BC High School Championships. Allison’s journey has taken her a little further. She earned a scholarship at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, an NCAA university in the United States. In her first month as a university athlete she has travelled to Los Angeles, California and Honolulu, Hawaii. She is one of the very few who become a starting player in their freshman year. In her first 11 matches she leads her team in digs and serve receive and is second in serving aces. And she is only 5’ 5” tall.

In the past 12 years, Highroad Academy has sent 11 female student athletes to colleges and universities from the Fraser Valley to Connecticut and Alaska & many places in between. Who will be next? Well, we want to find out. The thing that helps all of our athletes is an early start. This winter, from January to April, 2010, Highroad will be running our first ever elementary school girls volleyball league. It will be a way for girls in grades 3 – 6 to learn and play the sport of volleyball and for their parents to learn and ask questions as well.
